Like many music lovers, I also enjoy learning about the equipment we use to listen to it. John Darko is perhaps my favourite voice in this space and regularly produces excellent opinion pieces.

Below, he works out the cost of streaming over 50 years (the time you might imagine owning a vinyl) to negate any rent vs. buy objections, and estimates the lifetime cost of each album at US$0.003. That is 5,000 times cheaper than the CD I might have bought ten years ago.

So “can we please stop pretending that music isn’t free?”
